About El Paso
El Paso sits on the Rio Grande in western Texas in an intersection of the United States and Mexico. Surrounding El Paso is the Chihuahuan Desert, which is the second largest desert in North America. Summers in El Paso tend to be very hot and dry while winters lean towards mild and dry. From working ranches to hiking, from Old Mexico to rodeos, El Paso has it all.
The Chihenne Ranch is located near the Gila National Forest in the hills of the Black Range. The elevation ranges from 6500 feet to 8500 feet depending on what part of the property one is standing. Chihenne Ranch is a horse and cattle ranch and offers visitors a chance to see what life on a working ranch is like. Visitors also have the chance to go horseback riding, to visit Indian sites, see gold and silver mines, watch a cattle roundup, see cattle branding, take a road trip in a 4-wheeler and visit a ghost town.
Hikers and history buffs alike will enjoy Hueco Tanks State Park, just 45 minutes from downtown. Although reservations are required in order to enter the park it is worthwhile. Ancient pictographs, some thousands of years old, adorn the rock walls. Animal figures, humans and mythological designs have been drawn by countless Mescalero Apaches, the Jornada Mogollon culture, Kiowas and other earlier Native Americans. This area was also a stagecoach stop for the Butterfield Trail. Hiking, climbing and bird watching are all popular activities at Hueco Tanks State Park.
Visitors to El Paso can step back in time with a visit to Ciudad Juarez, or Old Mexico. Buy souvenirs like sombreros and Mexican blankets at the mercado (craft mall), see the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe which was established in 1659 or take a ride on the Border Jumper trolley for a guided tour of Old Mexico.
Experience a real rodeo at the Rancho Charro 100x. Eat a meal, have some drinks, listen to Mariachi bands and watch charro riders perform. Watch contestants, vaqueros and cowboys as they compete in horse riding, cattle herding, roping cattle, team roping, steer wrestling and bull riding.
There is so much to see and do in El Paso that choosing will be difficult. Wineries, galleries, fishing, eclectic dining, walking tours, cave hikes, Fort Bliss and the El Paso Zoo are a few more of the activities waiting in El Paso.
